Ukraine-names-new-naval-commander. KIEV, Ukraine, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has appointed Lt. Gen Ihor Voronchenko as new commander of the Ukrainian Navy.
Poroshenko consulted with the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, the defense minister and the chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the selection, announced Monday.
On April 15, Voronchenko became acting commander when Poroshenko fired Sergey Gaiduk, who was appointed in March 2014, citing shortcomings.
In announcing the promotion, Poroshenko cited instances in 2014 when Voronchenko demonstrated courage and loyalty during the annexation of Crimea by Russia.
Voronchenko outlined his vision, emphasizing the need for developing Ukraine’s naval forces in full compliance with NATO standards.
Voronchenko, 51, served with Soviet forces in Germany, then in the Belorussian military district.
After the collapse of the USSR, he took the oath of allegiance to the people of Ukraine.
