In a phone call to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Trump pledged increased military support, The Guardian reported Thursday.

“[We] agreed that yesterday’s missile launch by North Korea was a dangerous provocative act and a grave threat to security,” Abe said. “I told him that Japan is watching closely how China will cope with this North Korean issue.”

The prime minister added, “President Trump then made a strong remark, saying all options are on the table.”

According to the White House statement on the 35-minute call, Trump “made clear that the United States would continue to strengthen its ability to deter and defend itself and its allies with the full range of its military capabilities.”

“The president emphasized that the United States stands with its allies Japan and South Korea in the face of the serious threat that North Korea continues to pose,” the statement read.

Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to meet at their first summit on Thursday.

Ahead of the meeting, Trump said North Korea was his responsibility while suggesting earlier administrations mishandled the issue.

“That’s going to be my responsibility, but I will tell you that that responsibility could have been made a lot easier if it was handled years ago,” Trump said.

On the upcoming summit with Xi, the president said he looks forward to a “great meeting.”

“I’m sure we’re going to have a fantastic meeting and we’re going to talk about a lot of things, including, of course, North Korea, a problem, and that’s really a humanity problem,” Trump said.
