A patrol car spotted the head at the Christian Democratic Union regional office at 5:40 a.m. Saturday, according to police.

Authorities said the remains bore an “insulting inscription” directed at Merkel.

Police are investigating the incident, which they say violates the carcass disposal law.

Merkel has become unpopular in Germany, partly linked to her liberal policies toward refugees arriving in Europe from Africa and the Middle East.

Several other dead pigs have been found in the country as symbolic links to the refugees, many of whom are Muslim and who don’t eat pork.

On April 19, several unidentified people threw two pig heads at a cafe visited by refugees in the city of Lubeck.

In March, police found pig hooves, bones and ears at the entrance of a mosque in Gelsenkirchen. One month earlier, a dead pig was found by police on a plot of land designated for the construction of a mosque in Leipzig.
