By Thomas Ward,The White House, USA 25/02/2016, The New Mail. President Obama slams Donald Trump’s presidential chances. President Barack Obama finally spoke out against long-time nemesis and Republican Primary front runner Donald Trump at a press conference this Tuesday. The President called the billionaire hotelier’s experience into question and implied that he was not qualified for such a “serious job”.
“I believe that Donald Trump will not be President”, said Mr Obama. “And the reason I believe that is because I have a lot of faith in the American people. They understand that being President is a serious job.
“It’s not hosting a talk show or a reality show, it’s not promotion, it’s not marketing, it’s hard. It’s not a matter of pandering and doing whatever will get you in the news every day.”
The President’s disparaging comments come after a long period of inspired silence during which Mr Trump’s campaign to become the Republican Presidential nominee has gained increasing traction. He currently has around 37.4% of his party’s votes according to the polls, outstripping his nearest opponents Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio by a comfortable margin.
Donald Trump later responded to Mr Obama during an interview by saying that any such statements made by a President who had done so much damage to America were considered by Trump to be “a compliment”.
An outspoken critic of Obama since the very beginning of his tenure as President in November 2008, a large part of Trump’s bid for the Presidency has been built upon attacking Obama’s policies during his time in the White House – particularly his stance on health care and immigration.
In 2011 Mr Trump even went so far as to state that Mr Obama’s liberal stance on immigrants stemmed from the fact that he was not American himself and demanded that his official long form birth certificate be publicised. Obama did so and later that year got even with Mr Trump at the White House Correspondents Dinner, playing the introduction of Disney’s The Lion King and passing it off as his “official birth video”.
Mr Obama continued, “whoever’s standing where I’m standing right now has the nuclear codes with them, and can order 21 year olds into a fire fight, and has to make sure the banking system doesn’t collapse, and is responsible not just for the United States of America, but 20 other countries who are having big problems, or are falling apart and are going to look to us for something.
“The American people are pretty sensible and I trust that they will make a sensible choice in the end.”
