And amazingly, it was a relatively quick labour
An Indian mother has given birth to the country’s biggest ever baby, weighing in at a whopping 14.77 pounds.
Despite the boy’s size, medics say he had a smooth arrival, popping out after a speedy 15-minute labour.
The not-so-tiny tot was the ninth child for Firdous Khatun, 36, who herself tips the scales at an average 12 st 3lb.
While her eight previous children were all born at home, weighing about eight pounds apiece, number nine made his debut at Raja Ram Kalawati Hospital in Orai, Uttar Pradesh.
In dramatic scenes, Firdous’ husband, Kadir Raza, 40, rushed her to the hospital half an hour before she gave birth to India’s biggest baby.
Dr Anjana Gupta, who delivered the boy, said: “He is a miracle baby. In my 21 years of experience, I had never seen a newborn as big as him. We could not believe how, despite his big size, he smoothly came out.
“Though his shoulders got stuck for few seconds, within three minutes he was in my hands. He was so big that he did not fit in my hands. He is a beautiful baby.
“Though he had respiratory issues initially, both he and his mother are now doing fine. Strangely, the mother is not diabetic which usually causes the risk of obesity in newborn. We do not know why the baby is so big but he is healthy and all his parameters are fine.”
Because of his unusual magnitude, the little lad is being monitored by doctors at Vatsalya Hospital’s Child Care Unit, though he’s expected to be discharged in about five days.
The newborn knocks a rival from Rajasthan off India’s biggest baby top spot – the boy, weighing a staggering 13.16 pounds, was born via c-section last month.
