At least eight suspected gang members died in a shootout with the Mexican marines in Mexico City on Thursday, the navy said.
The navy said the suspected gang members opened fire on marines patrolling in Tlahuac. Among the dead was a leader identified as Felipe de Jesus N.
Military officials said the suspects were involved in extortion, kidnapping and homicide in Tlahuac, Milpa Alta, Xochimilco and Iztapalapa.
“With these actions, the [secretariat of the navy of Mexico] ratifies the commitment it has with Mexican families to maintain security in the country,” the navy said in a statement. “In this sense it is important to mention that naval elements develop their operations in accordance with … strict respect for human rights.”
