At-least-two-protestors-killed-after-storming-Green-Zone-in-Baghdad. BAGHDAD, At least two protestors were killed and several others were injured while attempting to force their way into Baghdad’s Green Zone on Friday, prompting authorities to declare a curfew in the area.
Thousands of protesters gathered at Liberation Square in Baghdad on Friday before attempting to enter the area known that contains government institutions and foreign consulates.
Security used tear gas, water cannons and sound bombs against protesters and also fired live rounds into the crowd.
The mostly Shia Muslim demonstrators rallied against government corruption, security failures and delays in implementing reform for the second time since April 30 when supporters of Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, known as Sadrists, invaded the Iraqi parliament.
On Friday, some protestors managed to enter the office of Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi before pulling out.
“Hundreds of demonstrators stormed into Abadi’s office at the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers and the building of the parliament,” sources told Ashraq Al-Awsat.
Joint Operations Command in Iraq released a statement which read “curfew on Baghdad until further notice” on Friday night after the protest.
