The Islamic State claimed responsibioity for the attack in Tangail, according to ajihadist threat monitoring group SITE Intelligence. The IS is also known as ISIS, ISIL and Daesh.

Nikhil Chandra Joarder, 50, was killed about noon Saturday in front of his tailoring shop at Kalibarhi Bazar. Nikhil had served a three-month sentence in 2012 for alleged derogatory remarks against Islam.

“Three youths arrived at the shop of Nikhil,” police official Muhammad Abdul Jalil said. “They took him to a nearby road saying they need to talk to him. Then they hacked him indiscriminately and fled after confirming his death.”

Police have not said who committed the murder.

Various Islamic militant groups have claimed responsibility for recent slayings in the country. On Monday, a leading gay rights activist and editor of the country’s only LGBT magazine, Xulhaz Mannan, was hacked to death along with another man in his apartment.

Last week, a student was arrested in the slaying of a university professor in Rajshahi, a killing that was claimed by the Islamic State. Last year four prominent secular bloggers were hacked to death.

In most cases al-Qaida or the IS has claimed responsibility for the slayings.
