A statement from Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade suggested, “We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in Indonesia, including Bali, at this time due to the high threat of terrorist attack …We continue to receive information that indicates that terrorists may be planning attacks in Indonesia.”

It advised Australian tourists and travelers that terrorists could be in “advanced stages” of preparing an attack, and specifically said travelers should exercise caution in “tourist hotspots.” Officials also suggested increased vigilance at places of worship, places with low security levels and “during significant holiday periods.”

The updated alert by the Australian government came as Indonesia, its northern neighbor and a favorite tourist and trade destination for Australians, increased security after terrorists attacked a coffee shop and police station in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, in January. Eight people, including the suspects, were killed.

DFAT issued a similar advisory regarding Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital, earlier this week.
