KABUL, Afghanistan, At least three people are dead after the Taliban attacked a compound for foreign contractors in Kabul that began with a massive truck bomb, according to reports.
At least two militants and one police officer are dead and one officer is injured after the truck bomb exploded about 1:25 p.m. at the heavily guarded North Gate Hotel, near Kabul’s airport. A gun battle followed between police and Taliban fighters.
Afghanistan’s TOLO News agency reports the battle is over with three militants dead, one in the blast and two were shot and killed. Three police officers were injured.
All of the hotel’s guests and staff are reportedly uninjured.
The blast was reportedly heard or felt across the city and might have played a role in a power outage about the time of the explosion.
The hotel is a frequent target of islamists and features watchtowers and blast walls.
Twin bombings on July 23 killed 80 people in Kabul in the deadliest attack since the U.S. invasion in 2001 pushed the Taliban out of power.
