39-killed-in-airstrike-in-Idlib-Syria. DLIB, Syria, Airstrikes carried out on a busy public vegetable market in Idlib killed at least 39 people and injured dozens others Sunday.
The White Helmets, a volunteer civil defense organization responding to the rebel-held areas of Syria, reported the strikes were suspected to have been carried out by Russian warplanes in support of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also said the airstrikes were carried out by Russian or Syrian government planes.
“There were regime and allied Russian warplanes flying in the area today. But we do not know yet which planes had carried out the strikes,” the Observatory’s head Rami Abdel Rahman told the DPA news agency.
A coalition of Syrian rebel groups that includes al-Qaida’s local branch, the Nusra Front, controls the city.
Syrian regime forces and Russian warplanes have intensified attacks on opposition-held areas in Syria since April 21, killings civilians.
Assad promised Tuesday “we will liberate every inch of Syria” against terrorists.
