3-dead-6-hurt-after-car-slams-into-Tel-Aviv-restaurant. TEL AVIV, Israel, Three people were killed and six more injured when a car slammed into a restaurant on a major street in central Tel Aviv on Saturday.
Authorities said the incident was not terrorist-related, Haaretz reported. Witnesses told police the driver of a black Audi appeared to have lost control and crashed into a pole, then the front of a restaurant located on Ben Yehuda Street. Patrons were seated outside the restaurant at the time of the crash.
Witnesses said the first thought for those in the area was that it was a failed car bombing, but when the driver appeared slumped over the steering wheel after the crash it became apparent that was not the case. The Times of Israel reported the driver was an elderly person who may have suffered a medical emergency and lost consciousness while driving.
The restaurant hit is called Furama, a Chinese restaurant, where diners were seated on a sidewalk patio when the crash happened. Photos of the scene show the restaurant’s front windows shattered and the front end of the car smashed in after having come to rest on the sidewalk.
Police are investigating the incident. None of the dead were identified, though police said the driver was among them. One of the injured was believed to be in serious condition, while the other five suffered minor injuries.
